June 6, 1939-June 23, 2018

George David Williams, 79, met his Savior face to face early Saturday morning, June 23, 2018, at Wayne UNC Health Care surrounded by his family.

George was born June 6, 1939, to the late Lucky Earl and Ellen Whitley Williams of the Elroy community.

George graduated from New Hope High School in 1957, and married Sue Gardner Williams Sept. 13, 1959.

George spent much of his career in sales, and retired from Nationwide Insurance in 2002 after 24 years of service.

During his retirement, George became an avid golfer, and enjoyed continuing to serve in various volunteer opportunities throughout the community.

One of his proudest volunteering opportunities was serving on the Goldsboro Rescue Squad for more than a decade.

George was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2002 for his exemplary service to the community and the state of North Carolina.

He also founded the Wayne County Friends of Law Enforcement committee to recognize local law enforcement and first responders.

George was a member of Pleasant Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church in Pikeville, where he served as a deacon, usher and Sunday school teacher.

A service to celebrate the life of George will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at 7 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church in Pikeville, N.C.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times, at his home.

The interment will be held Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, George is survived by his children, Dean Williams (Mary Beth), Denise Combs (Keith) and Neal Williams; grandchildren, Lauren Massey (Jesse), Eric Williams (Katie), Adam Combs, Victoria Combs, Taylor Williams, Tanner Williams and Emma Williams; great-grandchildren, Ella and Alaina Massey; brothers, Alton Williams and Brent Williams (Marsha); and sisters-in-law, Linda Joyce Sasser (Cordell) and Shirley Gardner.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his siblings, Earl, Mildred Smith, Frazier, Farrell, Marie Hinnant, Joyce Garris and Bob; sister-in-law, Nan Corrieri; and brother-in-law, Ray Gardner.

In lieu of flowers, the Williams family asks memorial contributions be made in George’s memory to Southeastern Cancer Care Cures for the Colors, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
