Delores Artis Hill was born in Wilson County, N.C., to the late James Broady Artis Sr. and the late Mary Best Artis Royal May 1, 1946.

She departed this life June 19, 2018.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Hill; son, Chester Stephen Hill; her oldest brother, James Broady Artis Jr.; and her youngest sister, Mary Artis Person. 

Funeral services to honor her life will be held Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 1 p.m. at St. James AME Zion Church in Goldsboro. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the church. 

She began her education in the Wilson County School System. Delores graduated from Speight High School in Saratoga, N.C. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fayetteville State University in 1969 and her master’s degree in middle grades education from Campbell University in 1991. 

Delores taught in Wayne County Public Schools from 1969 to 1996, and she retired with 27 years of service as a 7th, 8th and 9th grade teacher.

She touched the lives of many students as she taught them English, social studies, civics and science, and earned numerous accolades during her tenure as an educator. 

She met the love of her life, and was united in holy matrimony to Chester Hill in Wayne County June 15, 1974. They were married for 34 years until his passing March 18, 2009. To this union two children were born. 

Delores was a faithful member of St. James AME Zion Church for many years. She enjoyed bible study on Wednesday afternoons and loved spending quiet time with the Lord.

Demonstrating commitment to her spiritual growth, Delores continued her education by earning bachelor’s degree in theology from the North Carolina College of Theology in 2014. 

She was a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin and friend. She remained steadfast in her faith and belief in the goodness, grace and mercy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 

Delores leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted son, Brandon JeVon Hill of Goldsboro, N.C.; stepdaughter, Rosa LaDonna Rawls of Goldsboro, N.C.; three sisters, Mavis Regan (Zeb Jr.) and Linda Reese (Ronald) both of Goldsboro, N.C., and Ethelene Rodgers  of Wilson, N.C.; two brothers, Melvin Artis (Carolyn) of Goldsboro, N.C., and Ralph Artis (Annie) of Capitol Heights, Md.; a special goddaughter/niece, Cara Person of Durham, N.C.; two aunts, Winnie Williams and Nancy Holmes both of Goldsboro, N.C.; one uncle, Silas Best of Fremont, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Robert Hill (Barbara) of New Jersey; two sisters-in-law, Janice Hill and Edna Artis (Walter) both of Goldsboro, N.C.; and a special classmate and friend, Joyce Melvin Hicks (David) of Wilson, N.C.

She is survived by five stepsisters, four stepbrothers, many nieces, nephews and cousins and host of other relatives and friends.
