Garland Ray Starnes, 77, resident of Mount Olive, passed away Tuesday evening, April 3, at the North Carolina Home for Veterans in Kinston.

Born in Faison, he graduated from Mount Olive High School, after which he served in the United States Air Force in the 354th Squadron of the Air Police, having been stationed in France and at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He was employed at E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co. in Kinston for 32 years.

Mr. Starnes is survived by a son, Steven Starnes of Mount Olive; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori Starnes Price and Alex Price of New Bern; four grandchildren, Matthew Anderson and wife, Breanna, Mikayla Ray Starnes, Adam Price and Noah Price; a brother, Robert Earl Starnes of Seven Springs; a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Starnes Henson and Jerry Henson of Marbury, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Audrey G. Coates of Garner; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Gardner Starnes; his parents, Elman and Eva H. Starnes; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Marlene Starnes; parents-in-law, Rudolph "Doc" and Bertha F. Gardner; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jo Ann G. and Dennis Poythress; other brothers-in-law, Billy Rudolph Gardner and Troy Coates; and two nephews.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, April 8, at 3 p.m. at Calypso Cemetery, with the Rev. Mary Kay Best officiating.

Following the service, the family will greet friends at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Residents Counsel, North Carolina Home for Veterans, 2150 Hull Road, Kinston, N.C., 28504.
