Steve "Cigar" Allen Howell, 59, Dudley, passed away suddenly Saturday at Rex Hospital in Raleigh surrounded by his wife and children.
He is survived by the love of his life, Leigh Ann Howell of the home; his mama, Willie Mae McCloud of Dudley; two daughters, Amber Foss and her husband, Brandon, of Mount Olive and Rachel Howell of the home; a son, John Howell of Dudley; two brothers, Elwood and Jeffery Matthews both of Dudley; his beloved granddaughter, Lila Gray Foss; and his special K9 companion, "Ruger."
A service to celebrate Steve's life will be held Wednesday evening, March 7, in the chapel of Tyndall Funeral Home beginning at 7 p.m.
Visitation will be during the hour prior to the funeral beginning at 6 p.m.
Burial will take place Thursday at noon in Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The family is also receiving friends at the home on O'Berry Road, Dudley.
Flowers are welcome.
Steve was an avid outdoorsman, who loved life and his family dearly.
After proudly serving his country in the United States Navy, he began his 30-year career with the Department of Corrections.
Following his retirement in 2012, Steve enjoyed spending time with his mama, hunting, fishing and being with his family and friends.
