1st Lt. Charles William Immler Jr. ("Chuck") died at age 89 on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017.

Born the child of the Depression in Baltimore in 1927, he began an adventurous life. He attended McDonough, a military school, under a full scholarship and graduated in 1945. He enlisted in the military immediately upon turning 17, studied Japanese at the University of Pennsylvania and served as a lieutenant in Japan for two years.

He contracted polio while in Japan, and after a long hospitalization was retired from the military for physical disability. He then graduated from Western Maryland College and began his travel and living abroad, including in Australia, Morocco, Spain, Germany and Holland. During this time, he worked as a sales representative, started his own contract maintenance business and, in 1960, began his own company which distributed Nikon, Hasselblad and Pentax cameras to the military throughout Europe.

He began a long career of flying in 1968, flying all over Europe and crossed the Atlantic two times. With increasing post polio's debilitating effects in 1975, he returned to the United States, settling in Goldsboro, North Carolina. There he established an air charter service. He flew all over the United States and Canada, including Alaska.

He is survived by his wife, Dinnah Immler; and children of various wives: Vivian Ohms, Gerald Immler, Mark Immler, Tina Lee and KC Immler. Also, seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was industrious, optimistic and cheerful till the end.
