BOBBY GENE TAYLOR

June 13, 1944-April 9, 2017

Bobby Gene Taylor, 72, affectionately called Pop Pop by his grandson, passed away suddenly Sunday, April 9, 2017, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill while surrounded by his family.

Bobby was born in Wayne County June 13, 1944, to the late Floyd and Henrietta Butts Taylor.

He enjoyed life and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandson, Taylor.

Bobby was a valued employee of the United States Postal Service, where he retired after 36 years of service as postmaster for LaGrange Post Office.

He dearly loved his wife, Marlene. They would spend countless hours relaxing on their deck in Atlantic Beach leisurely enjoying the days with each other.

Bobby's love for his daughter, Shawne, was evident in everything he did. He made sure she was taken care of in every way imaginable, and she could depend on him for anything and everything no matter what.

While in retirement, Bobby enjoyed working and tinkering on things around his home and his home at the beach. His neighbors could always count on him to have duct tape, WD40, an assortment of nails and screws and the knowledge of how to fix almost anything; he tried to pass this skill to his son-in-law with limited results.

He loved country music, anything from Marty Robbins to Willie Nelson would do, keeping his yard beautiful and most of all spending time watching his grandson play baseball. True to the postman's creed, he didn't care if it was hot or cold, sunny, cloudy, raining or sleeting; he was always there cheering him on. Their bond was special, and it allowed Bobby a second childhood.

He had a lasting impact on everyone he met, and will be dearly missed.

Bobby's greatest joy was spending time with family and friends and telling stories. He would often tell the same story several times, but told it so well that nobody cared.

He had a huge heart, always giving and reaching out to others, and he never met a stranger.

A service to celebrate Bobby's life will be held at one of his favorite places to be, his backyard, Friday, April 14, 2017, at 3 p.m. In keeping with Bobby's interest, all guests attending the service are encouraged to dress casual, and shoes are optional as Bobby always enjoyed being in the yard barefoot.

The family will greet friends Friday immediately following the service at his home, 404 Lake Pines Drive, LaGrange.

Bobby is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marlene Gurley Taylor; his daughter and son-in-law, Shawne and Kyle Llewellyn of Winterville; his grandson and the apple of his eye, Taylor Llewellyn; his sister, Dorothy Mason of Goldsboro; countless nieces, nephews and cousins; and an assortment of extended family members and friends whom he loved very much.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest memorials be given to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105, or please perform an act of kindness with Bobby in mind.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seymourfuneralhome.com.
