Bettie Gray Best Browne died Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at her home in Raleigh.
Betty Gray was born April 28, 1921, to John Lee Best Sr. and Allie Gray Strickland Best.
In 1951, Bettie Gray married the late Decatur Gwaltney Browne of Norfolk, Va.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, John Lee Best Jr., Sarah Best Davis and Barbara Best Fonville all of Goldsboro and Mary James Best of Chapel Hill.
Since her marriage in 1951, Bettie Gray and Decatur lived in Raleigh.
She is survived by sons, Pembroke Decatur Browne of Raleigh, Sheppard Decatur Browne of Wendell and John Lee Browne Sr. and his wife, Martha, of Wendell, and grandsons, John Lee Browne Jr. and Andrew Thomas Browne.
Bettie Gray was educated in Goldsboro city schools and at Greensboro College.
Prior to marriage, Bettie Gray worked for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. and Bank of Wayne.
In Raleigh, she worked for Fred Olds Elementary, the North Carolina General Assembly and Meals on Wheels of Wake County.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 12, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Road, Raleigh, N.C., 27608.
