Mr. Eugene Shaw Jr., 89, was born in LaGrange, N.C., April 6, 1927.

The Lenoir County resident quietly passed away at 6:53 a.m. Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, N.C.

Shaw attended the Lenoir County Public School System.

Early in his adult life, Mr. Shaw served his country by enlisting into the United States Army. His tour of duty included Berlin, Germany.

Due to segregation, blacks were not allowed to fight on the front lines, and Shaw was relegated to the position of a supply man, and later promoted to a post with the Red Cross.

After Mr. Shaw's tour of duty, he was honorably discharged from the United States Army.

Shortly after completing his term in the service, Shaw moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1946.

He met and married the former Miss. Janie B. Floyd. Together, the pair raised five children.

He worked in New York for more than 25 years, retiring as a trainmaster for the Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York City.

Shortly after retiring, Mr. Shaw returned to his beloved hometown of LaGrange, N.C., where he enjoyed the remaining years of life.

His daughter, Rita Shaw, preceded him in death and accompanied God to greet his new arrival.

Funeral service will be conducted Friday, March 24, 2017, at noon in Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 209 Carey St., LaGrange, N.C. Dr. Michael A. Johnson will officiate.

Interment will follow in Fairview Memorial Cemetery, 395 W. James St., LaGrange, N.C.

Also, there will be a private viewing for the Shaw family "ONLY" Friday, March 24, 2017, from 11 to 11:50 a.m. in Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 209 Carey St., LaGrange, N.C.

Seventeen days shy of turning 90 years old, Mr. Shaw leaves a legacy of personal and civic accomplishments.

Leading the list of loved ones to cherish his memory includes his sister, Edna Shaw Walker of LaGrange, N.C.; four children, Janet D. Shaw Williams (Turner) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Kathy Shaw Burnside (James) of Mebane, N.C., Judith Shaw of New York, N.Y., and Eugene Allen Shaw (Marcia) of Riverdale, N.Y.

Continuing to promote his story are nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Carl McVay; a longtime friend, Gertrude Moses of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a host of countless relatives and friends.

Friday, March 24, 2017, the family members will assemble at Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 414 E. Washington St., LaGrange, N.C., at 10 a.m. in preparation for the funeral procession.

Flowers may be sent to Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 414 E. Washington St., LaGrange, N.C., beginning Thursday, March 23, 2017, at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
