A.J. "Jr." Mitchell Jr., 71, Dudley, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

A.J. was born in Wayne County May 27, 1945, to the late A.J. Mitchell Sr. and Minnie Anderson Mitchell.

His first and favorite occupation was a farmer, and many of his happiest times were spent atop a tractor on the family farm.

He was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church.

A.J. was a good husband and a great father, and had a generous heart. He provided a wonderful home for his family, and gave all he could to his family and strangers alike.

A service to celebrate A.J.'s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating. Interment will follow in Anderson Family Cemetery on Arrington Bridge Road in Dudley.

A.J. is survived by his wife, Martha Cooper Mitchell; daughters, Sheila M. Wilkins and husband, Keith, of Goldsboro and Jane M. Strickland and husband, Danny Jr., of Dudley; son, Andy Mitchell of Dudley; brothers, Zeb Mitchell and Bruce Mitchell both of Dudley; sisters, Annette Carter and Lorraine Carter both of Indian Springs; and sister-in-law, Alice Mitchell of Grantham.

He is also survived by a special little girl, Bella Ramirez.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Mitchell; sister, Lib Anderson; and three infant sisters.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 24, 2017, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home.
