Hazel Kornegay Thornton, 92, Dudley, went to be with her Lord Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, while a resident of Genesis Healthcare of Mount Olive Center.

Hazel was born in Wayne County May 26, 1924, one of 10 children, to the late Dawson and Sarah Capps Kornegay. She was married to the late Young Edward Thornton.

Her most significant role in life, and what she did best, was being a loving mother to her children. Hazel was the rock of her family; her husband and children knew that she loved them with all her heart, and truly was a blessing to them.

She was a member of Black Jack Grove Free Will Baptist Church.

A service celebrating Hazel's life will be held Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Interment will be Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, at 11 a.m. in Providence United Methodist Church.

Hazel is survived by her daughters, Betty L. Rose (Jimmy) of Rocky Mount, Edith Shivar (D.W.) of Seven Springs and Brenda Etheridge (Elton) of Wilson; sons, the Rev. Edward L. Thornton (Brenda) of Snow Hill, Cecil Roger Thornton (Ruth) of Dudley and Ted R. Thornton (Kim) of Mount Olive; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by a special friend and caregiver, Rose Hickman.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Dawson Thornton.

Memorials may be given in Hazel's memory to Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church, 341 Black Jack Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
