JOHN HENRY BROGDEN

John Henry Brogden, 77, Goldsboro, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield after a long illness.

He was born July 20, 1938, in Wayne County to Pearl and Ed Brogden.

Mr. Brogden was preceded in death by his siblings, Lillie Mae Benton, Ruby Pate, Evelene Brogden, Ruth Rollison, Mildred McCullen, Christine Brogden, Thelma Daniels, Thurman Brogden, Josephine Raynor, James Phillip Brogden and Ed Brogden Jr.

He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kristen Brogden.

John Henry was employed by Borden Manufacturing for 20 years. He later was employed by Griffin Exterminating, and retired from there after 25 years of service.

John Henry played USSSA softball for 18 years, and later was a coach for 12 years.

He received the Tom Caulberg MVP Award in 1968, and was inducted into the North Carolina USSSA Hall of Fame as an outstanding manager in 1998.

John Henry was an avid fan of Jeff Gordon, NASCAR, the University of North Carolina Tar Heel basketball and football and the Atlanta Braves.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emma; his sons, John Brogden Jr. of Goldsboro, David Brogden and wife, Lori, of Pine Level and Brian Brogden and wife, Beverly, of Wilmington; six grandchildren, Jason, Cody, Stephen, Luke and Jada Brogden and Josh Price; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

A service celebrating John Henry's life will be held Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Clifton Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
