Billy Ray Grimes, 83, Fremont, passed away Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family.

Billy was born in Lenoir County Sept. 3, 1932, to the late Malcolm and Lossie Potter Grimes. He was married to the late Elizabeth Weaver Owens Grimes.

Billy was a retired carpenter, and had served as a volunteer fireman with Faro Fire Department.

A service celebrating Billy's life will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Gurkins officiating. Interment will be Friday at 11 a.m. in West Cemetery.

Billy is survived by his brother, Kenneth Grimes of Stantonsburg; and his stepgrandchildren, Edgar Britt, Ben Tapp, Joey Tapp, Shelton Owens Jr., Jason Call and Melissa Melvin. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and his special canine friend, Buddy.

In addition to his wife and parents, Billy was preceded in death by his sisters, Hilda Rankin and Ava Lane; brothers, Linwood Earl Grimes, Toby Grimes, Alton Grimes and Cecil Grimes, and his stepchildren, Helen O. Tapp and Shelton Owens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wayne County Humane Society, P.O. Box 821, Goldsboro, N.C., 27533.

The family will receive friends Thursday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and at other times, at his residence.
