IVEY JONATHAN CRAWFORD

Oct. 31, 1921-Oct. 4, 2015Ivey Jonathan Crawford, Jr., "I.J.", of Pikeville, died peacefully on Oct. 4, 2015.

He was born Oct. 31, 1921, to the late Ann Vail Crawford and Ivey Jonathan Crawford and was raised in Pikeville. He graduated from Pikeville High School in 1940.

I.J. worked in the men's retail clothing business and eventually opened his own store in Pikeville, Crawford Young Men's Shop, which he operated for many years. He also was involved in farming operations on his family's farm and in later years developed a mobile home park, Ivey Lane in Pikeville.

Mr. Crawford was a mason in the Harmony Masonic Lodge 340 A.F. & A.M. for more than 50 years and had been recognized for this service with a 50-year pin. He was a life-long member of Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church where he chaired the Board of Deacons and was a faithful member of the Lancaster/Bryan/Talton Sunday School Class.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. on at Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Barry Stallings officiating. The Crawford family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. A private interment for the family will be held in the Pikeville Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Survivors include a daughter, Olivia Crawford Collini and husband, Charles Weaver Collini of Pinehurst; a son, Lloyd William Crawford of Pikeville; two granddaughters, Meredith Cooke Fitch and husband, David Lee Fitch of Chapel Hill and Beverly Faye Crawford of Pikeville; two great-grandchildren, Virginia Ivey Fitch and David Lee Fitch Jr; sisters, Dolly Crawford Boone of Pikeville, Kathleen Crawford Edgerton of Micro; a sister-in-law, Lillie Sasser Jones of Patetown; and a brother-in-law, Cordell Sasser and wife, Joyce of Patetown.

Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Sasser Crawford, a sister, Elizabeth Crawford Howell, and a brother, Ben Cooper Crawford.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the loving care provided by Mr. Crawford's caregivers, Linda Smith, Tammy Trail and Brenda Witherspoon in Pikeville, Michelle Lunsford and Karen Sanborn in Pinehurst and to Lewis Spencer for his devoted service over the years.

In lieu of flowers, the Crawford family requests that memorials be made to Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, 1100 Pikeville-Princeton Road, Pikeville, N.C. 27863.
