THELMA P. SMITH

Feb. 2, 1917-June 27, 2015

Mrs. Thelma Parks Smith, known affectionately as "Monkey," LaGrange, died Saturday, June 27, 2015, at her residence.

Born in Wayne County Feb. 2, 1917, she was the daughter of Joseph and Nannie Britt Parks.

A homemaker, Mrs. Smith's most cherished role was as a devoted wife and mother, who attentively cared for her family.

Cooking, sewing, tending a garden and walking at least two miles each day were activities she did until the age of 92.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Free Gospel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William "Willie" Henry Smith, and a son, William Harper Smith.

Her surviving family includes her children, Nannie Mae Barrow of Snow Hill, Margie S. Ormond and husband, A.C., of Hookerton, Bob Smith and wife, Peggy, of LaGrange, Bruce Smith and wife, Rose, of LaGrange and Ruby S. Pope of Goldsboro; a daughter-in-law, Jeanette Smith of LaGrange; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and nine great great-grandchildren.

Additionally, the devoted caregivers who attentively cared for Mrs. Smith include Jeanette Potter, Judy Grant, B.J. Shingleton, Betty Chase, Carrol Henderson and the staff of Community Hospice.

Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Monday, June 29, at Free Gospel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Danny Hamm officiating. Committal services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, at Smith Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Monday evening from 6 to 6:45 p.m. in the church fellowship hall and other times at Mrs. Smith's residence.
