Mrs. Inez Lewis Whitfield, 86, lifelong resident of the Indian Springs community of Mount Olive, after a brief illness, was ushered into the welcoming arms of her Lord and savior. Death came as she was surrounded by her loving and supportive family, while she was being tenderly cared for at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Services to celebrate the good, Christian life of this lady will be held Sunday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with her grandson, the Rev. Joshua Whitfield, and her pastor, the Rev. Dustin Bannister, officiating, and followed by visitation.

Friends and family are also being received at the Whitfield residence, the same home, up in which she grew, and also where she returned after her parents' passing.

She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, B.R. "Bootly" Whitfield, and near her beloved daughter, Brunetta Outlaw Dowling, at Wayne Memorial Park. Committal services will be Monday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m.

A lifelong member of Northeast Original Free Will Baptist Church, she had been active in the ladies auxiliary of the church, and had been a former choir member.

She was also a member of Indian Springs Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She was retired from the cafeteria at Spring Creek Elementary School.

Prior to her employment with the school system, she worked at Belk-Tyler's.

Mrs. Whitfield is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Beverly Ray "Boots" Whitfield Jr. and Jenny Whitfield of Goldsboro, the Rev. Michael Lewis "Mickey" Whitfield and Donna Whitfield of Mount Olive and Henry Jeffrey "Jeff" Whitfield and Lisa Whitfield of Mount Olive; seven grandchildren, Beverly Williams and husband, Bobby, of Mount Olive, Susan W. Smith of Charlotte, Matt Whitfield and wife, Reagan, of Raleigh, the Rev. Joshua M. Whitfield and wife, Allison, of Deep Run, Taylor Whitfield and wife, Brandy, of Mount Olive and Khrystal Ann Whitfield and Zachary Whitfield both of Mount Olive; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Perry Lewis of Mount Olive; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and daughter, she was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Kelly "Bob" Lewis and Lucy Jones Lewis; two brothers, Fred Lewis and Tom Lewis; three sisters, Willie Lewis Barwick, Viola Lewis Hines and Callie Lewis Wicker; and a dear friend, Jean W. Holmes, who was like another sister.
