Albert "Al" Ernest Greene, 77, Pikeville, passed away Monday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his loving family.

Al was born in Whitinsville, Mass., Feb. 3, 1937, to the late Albert Theodore Greene and Hazel Burroughs Greene.

He loved and served the people of Wayne County for many years.

Al was retired as the chief of the Pikeville Police Department and as a special deputy of the Wayne County Sheriff's Department.

He was currently serving as a Pikeville town commissioner.

Al was retired from the Unites States Marine Corps, and was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League. He was presently serving as commandant of the Waynesborough Detachment.

Al was a member of American Legion Post 11, and was president of the Wayne County Veterans and Patriot Coalition.

He was also a lifetime member of the VFW and current commander of VFW Goldsboro Post 2615.

Al was a lifetime member of Pikeville Lions Club, and served as past district governor of 31H.

A celebration of life and service will be held Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with Chaplain Bill Boyd and Chaplain David Williams officiating. Entombment will follow at Pikeville Cemetery with full military honors.

Al is survived by his wife, Kristy Brown Greene; daughters, Sherry Greene of Pikeville, Denise Meekins of Jacksonville and Melissa Vera and husband, Raul, of Pikeville; and his brother, William Greene and wife, Judy, of Massachusetts.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew Meekins, Maddie, Mikaela and Gracie Vera and Mason Leake.

In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Donah.

The family requests that memorials may be made to the Marine Corps League, 2973 U.S. 117 South, Dudley, N.C., 28333; Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534; or North Carolina Lions Club Inc., 7050 Camp Dogwood Drive, Sherrills Ford, N.C., 28673.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and at other times, at the home.
