Clifton "Cliff" Eugene Noble, 85, Greensboro, passed Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at Friends Homes West in Greensboro, N.C.

Clifton was born Aug. 20, 1929, in Goldsboro, N.C., the son of John Ivey and Sarah Brock Noble.

He graduated from Goldsboro High School and East Carolina University, and was an honorary alumnus of Virginia Intermont College.

His professional education included the Savings and Loan Graduate School of Indiana University, Savings and Loan Executive School, University of Connecticut and the Savings and Loan School of Development, University of Georgia.

Cliff was a high school history teacher in North Carolina from 1952 to 1957.

He also served as the physical fitness director of the YMCA in Greensboro and Elkin, N.C.

He then worked as the assistant secretary of the Federal Home Loan Bank in Greensboro from 1962 to 1972.

In 1973, he became the senior vice president of Charter Federal Savings Bank in Bristol, Va., retiring in 1993 to Greensboro.

Cliff also served as an Atlantic Coast Conference football umpire for 15 years (1972 to 1987). He officiated Carolina League and SAC-8 football for 29 years (1964 to 1993) and high school basketball and football for 38 years (1954 to 1992).

He served as president of Morning Optimist Club of Greensboro (1963) and president of Kiwanis Club of Bristol, Va., (1978), and was a member of Elks Lodge of Greensboro.

Surviving are his loving wife, Carolyn Loftin Noble of Greensboro; children, Steve Noble and wife, Cindy, of Roanoke, Va., and Dr. Gwendolyn Noble and husband, Dr. Tom Lint, of Chicago; grandchildren, Drew Noble and fiancée, Hannah Bowling, of Pensacola, Fla., Mark Noble of Hickory, N.C., Leigh Noble of New Paltz, N.Y., and Meg van Staveren and husband, Stefan, of Cary, N.C.; and great-grandchildren, Noelle and Henry van Staveren.

Clifton was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters and five brothers, Louise, Alma, Elwood, Earl, David and twins, Stanley and Fred.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Goldsboro, N.C., First Baptist Church of Elkin, N.C., First Baptist Church of Bristol, Va., and Lawndale Baptist Church in Greensboro.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lawndale Baptist Church, with Dr. Joe Giaritelli officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel.
