Elizabeth Sutton Herring, 101, LaGrange, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014.
Elizabeth was born Jan. 4, 1913, in Lenoir County to the late Jim and Eliza Hill Sutton.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Ben D. Herring; daughters, Kathryn Garris and Marie Bartlett; brother, Horace Sutton; and sisters, Lucille Hill and Sadie Ruth Boing.
Independent by nature, Elizabeth enjoyed time spent reading the Bible, cooking, quilting and her daily walk. She always looked forward to spending time with her sisters, which they affectionately referred to as "Sister Day."
She was a devoted member of White Oak Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for many years.
Always one to be busy, she loved sweeping her house and, in earlier years, sweeping her yard.
Miss Elizabeth always gave something to those who visited her, and was always willing to extend a helping hand to those in need.
A service to celebrate Elizabeth's life will be held Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bob Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Elizabeth had a great love for her family, and is survived by a son, Marlin "Buck" Herring and wife, Joyce, of Maysville; daughter, Mabel Lynch Smith and husband, McGee, of Goldsboro; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home.
