Rowena Middleton Hulse, 96, Goldsboro, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Rowena was born in Camilla, Ga., Jan. 8, 1918, to the late John Wesley and Donia Ward Middleton. She was married to the late Herbert Bruce Hulse Sr.

Rowena studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music.

Rowena was a longtime member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Goldsboro.

She dedicated her life to serving her family.

Rowena was an avid bridge player, gardener and lover of pets.

Rowena was a proud Democrat.

Rowena lived a life of dedication to her family and friends and to her community.

She served her community many ways as a member of the Evergreen Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Wayne County Humane Society.

Above all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.

A service celebrating Rowena's life will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Jill Beimdiek presiding. Interment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Rowena is survived by her daughter, Dr. Diana Hulse of Fairfield, Conn.; son, Brian Geoffrey Hulse and wife, Lee, of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Christopher Ward Hatfield and wife, Maggie, Timothy Carl Hatfield and wife, Jocelyn, Herbert Bruce Hulse III, Alexandra Elizabeth Hulse, Ann Reed Hulse, Hallie Middleton Hulse and Lura Edgerton Hulse; great-grandchildren, Truman Hatfield and Chester Hatfield; her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Hulse of Goldsboro; and a special friend, Virginia Mansour.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Herbert Bruce Hulse Jr., and sister, Gwendolyn Middleton.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 200 N. James St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Sterling House and Kitty Askins Hospice Center, who cared for her and her family in so many kind and thoughtful ways through the years and during this time of loss.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home of Geoff and Lee Hulse, 1513 E. Mulberry St., Goldsboro.
