RUTH MCCARTER HOFFMAN

Aug. 23, 1928-Oct. 7, 2014

Ruth McCarter Hoffman, 86, went to be with her Lord Tuesday after a brief illness.

Born in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Roney McCarter and Mae White McCarter.

She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Charles E. McDaniel Sr. and Elmer J. Hoffman; infant son, Arley Jonathan McDaniel; brothers, Arley E. McCarter and Bobby W. McCarter; sister, Sadie M. Southerland; and grandson, Charles E. McDaniel III.

Ruth was the in-home service coordinator with Wayne County Services on Aging, and was a member of Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1945, and went on to be very involved in her community and her church.

A service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Heath and the Rev. Frederick Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Family members will greet friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

Ruth is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles E. McDaniel Jr. and wife, Mary L. McDaniel, of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Roney A. McDaniel and wife, Edith J. Cohen MD, of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter, Debra P. Thompson of Chapel Hill; two stepsons, John Richard Hoffman of Asheville and Donald Jay Hoffman of Homer, Mich.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

"Miss Ruth" was many things to many people, and her kindred extended far beyond traditional family boundaries. She was always beautifully turned out, often with a fashionable hat.

She was famous for her cathead biscuits and her wonderful ability to tell a funny story. Ruth was a warm and loving person, who made a stranger feel like a friend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Wayne County Services on Aging, P.O. Box 227, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530 or Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 155, Goldsboro, N.C., 27533.
