Mr. McCray Wells, 81, lifelong resident of Rones Chapel community near Mount Olive, passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 16, at home in his favorite recliner with his family gathered around.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, July 19, at 10 a.m. at Rones Chapel United Methodist Church, and will be officiated by the Rev. Mike Whatley, the Rev. Richard C. Hill and the Rev. Tom Hoogerland. Interment will follow in Wells-Southerland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 18, and at other times, at the residence.

Known as "Crow" to many, he was a well-known area farmer who was regarded for his excellent farming skills in producing top tobacco crops. Too, he was the forerunner in growing strawberries for the market, which he sold on a "booking" basis.

He had served in the Korean War, and was a member of Rones Chapel Church.

Surviving family members include his wife of nearly 63 years, Evelyn Williamson Wells of the home; his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Wells Newsome and Bruce A. Newsome of Eureka; grandson, Bryce Newsome of Greenville; a brother, Cecil Wells of Texas; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley Wells Ellis of Mount Olive, Beverette Wells Davis and William Davis of Mount Olive, Peggy Wells Whitted and Ormond Whitted of Harkers Island, Betty Wells Reaves and Jimmy Reaves of Little River, S.C., and Linda Kay Wells of Mount Olive; a sister-in-law, Shirley Cashwell Wells of Calypso; and his beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny Mac Wells and Sadie Dixon Wells; a sister, Winnifred Wells; two brothers, Everette Dixon "Shorty" Wells and J. W. Wells; an infant brother; and a brother-in-law, Fred N. Ellis.

Floral tributes are welcome and so are memorial gifts to Rones Chapel Church Building Fund, 138 Garner Chapel Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.
