ELMORE SMITH BUCHAN JR.

Dec. 29, 1940-May 3, 2014

Elmore Smith Buchan Jr., 73, Ocean Drive, S.C., died peacefully May 3, 2014.

Smith was born in Lake City, S.C., Dec. 29, 1940, to Harriet Elam Cockfield of Lake City and Elmore Smith Buchan Sr. of Mullins, S.C.

Smith grew up in Mullins and attended the University of North Carolina, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity before graduating from Atlantic Christian College.

In 1963, he married Sandra Kloo Chase of Florence, SC. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 7, 2013.

Like 10 generations of Buchan men before him, Smith was a career tobacconist, working first for A.H. Buchan Tobacco Co. of Mullins, founded by his grandfather. He went on to work at Universal Leaf before following his father to Gallaher Limited, a major UK-based tobacco company.

When his father passed away in 1974, Smith, at age 34, became the youngest director of Leaf in the company’s history. Over the course of his career, his work took him to six of the seven continents, with the family living in Ireland and England before settling in Goldsboro, N.C.

Smith was a lifelong hunter and fisherman and a charter member of Nomads of Mattamuskeet.

A lifelong Presbyterian, he served as an elder of First Presbyterian Church of Loris, S.C., for four years.

Smith is survived by his wife, Sandra; children, Chase Thompson (Carter) of Richmond, Va., James Buchan (Kelly) also of Richmond and Sanborn Buchan (Gentry) of Wilson, N.C.; and grandchildren, Zachary, Thomas, Liza and Rollins.

In addition, he is survived by his brother Archibald Buchan (Eleanor) of Anderson, S.C., and their children, John Smith and Catherine Elizabeth.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Harriet Jayne Buchan McElrath (John) of Greenwood, S.C., and survived by their children, Shawn and Shane, as well as too many beloved first cousins to name.

A memorial service for Smith will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church, 5435 Main St., Loris, S.C., 29569, with pastor Dr. Tim Osment officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church and again following the service Tuesday morning.

Private committal services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), P.O. Box 2484, Richmond, Va., 23218; consider becoming an organ donor in celebration of Smith’s 15 years as a heart recipient; or donate to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 425, Loris, S.C., 29569.
