John Edwin Weyher Jr., M.D., 89, died March 5, 2014, at his home in Wilmington, N.C.

Dr. Weyher was born May 18, 1924, in Kinston, N.C., son of the late John Edwin Weyher Sr. and Charlotte Wooten Weyher.

After graduating from Grainger High School in Kinston, N.C., he received a Bachelor of Science degree in medicine from the University of North Carolina, where he was a member of the V-12 program of the United States Naval Reserve.

He completed the University of North Carolina School of Medicine's two-year medical program, and enrolled at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa., where he completed his M.D. in 1948. He was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity.

After completing his internship at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, Texas, Dr. Weyher served two years in the United States Navy.

He completed a residency in urology at Kennedy Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was certified by the American Board of Urology, and was a member of the American Urological Association and the North Carolina Medical Society.

He practiced urology in Goldsboro, N.C., for 28 years, was a member of the Wayne County Medical Society and was on the staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Following his retirement in 1985, he moved to Topsail Beach, N.C., for several years, prior to moving to Wilmington, N.C., in 2000.

Dr. Weyher is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patsy Roberts Weyher; two daughters, Karen Weyher Gavigan and husband, Frank, of Greensboro, N.C., and Melissa Weyher Saunders and husband, Robert Jr., of Newport News, Va.; and four grandchildren, John Francis Gavigan, Matthew Weyher Gavigan, Joseph Braden Saunders and Grace Frances Saunders.

He is also survived by a sister, Rachel Weyher Dillard of Black Mountain, N.C., and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Karl Weyher, and his sister, Louise Weyher Markham.

A memorial service will be held at Edwards' Funeral Home chapel at 702 N. Queen St., Kinston, N.C., Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at 11 a.m.
