FRED LUTZ

Fred Lutz, 92, Goldsboro, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
A retired educator and former member of the Goldsboro City Council, Lutz was the eighth and youngest child of the late Albert Lee and Cora Etta Abernathy Lutz of Catawba County.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sister and his loving and devoted wife of nearly 68 years, Catherine Marie King Lutz.
He is survived by a son, Frederick King Lutz, and wife, Bernadine, of Rochester, N.Y.
After finishing at the top of his high school class, Lutz earned his undergraduate degrees in English and French from Shaw University, his master's degree from North Carolina Central University and a degree in educational administration from North Carolina A&T State University.
He taught in the Moore County schools, serving as a guidance counselor and football coach, in addition to his teaching duties, before eventually being promoted to principal of Vineland Elementary School.
He served as a principal in the Robeson County school system during integration, helping his school earn accreditation and organizing its first PTA. He later served as a principal in the Red Springs City Schools system.
Lutz served as principal of Southern Pines Elementary School in Moore County, which was one of the first in the state to implement a kindergarten.
He studied with British educators at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to learn the British public school method of education, which was he helped translate into the local schools curriculum, and spent a summer as visiting professor of early childhood education at St. Andrews College in Laurinburg.
Lutz and his wife moved to Wayne County in 1974, where he was assistant principal at Dillard Middle School, and later served as an administrator in the Goldsboro City Schools until his retirement in 1984.
He served on the boards of the United Way and the Community Arts Council, and was a member of the Wayne County ABC board, serving as its chairman.
Lutz was elected to a seat on the Goldsboro City Council in 1987, serving two terms before deciding not to seek re-election. He served as mayor pro tem in 1992.
A member of First African Baptist Church, Lutz served on its board of trustees, taught Sunday school and was president of its layman's league.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at First African Baptist Church, 803 Harris St. in Goldsboro. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m., at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.
