JULIA BRASWELL JACKSON

Julia Braswell Jackson, 88, rested in the arms of Jesus Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at 12:25 p.m. She was surrounded by children and other family members.

Mrs. Jackson was a retired teacher at Belfast Elementary School in the Wayne County Public Schools.

She served as president of the North Carolina Eastern District Community Service Federation for the South Atlantic Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

Mrs. Jackson was a sought-after speaker throughout the state.

She was a member of Mount Zion Seventh-day Adventist Church in Parkstown, where a viewing and celebration service will be held Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. The family will be available from 7 to 8.

At other times, the family may be visited at the family home, 107 Rosa Lane, LaGrange, N.C. (Parkstown community).

Funeral services will be at Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1065 Tommy's Road in Goldsboro, at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013. The resting place will be at Old Mill Cemetery on Central Heights Road.

After working for Head Start, Mrs. Jackson attended and graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

She was active in her church, the community and many civic organizations, including Community Development and Community Services.

She was a recognizable and welcomed volunteer for the Adventist Disaster Relief Agency (ADRA), facilitating and delivering survival supplies, canned goods, fresh vegetables and clothing after hurricanes throughout eastern North Carolina.

Mrs. Julia Jackson was married for 63 years to Samuel McKinley Jackson, who preceded her in death. Six children were born of this union, Joyce Elvira Bowden (James "Dick") of Raleigh, N.C., Marshall Jackson (Donna) of Garner, N.C., Gloria LaVern Jackson (Jessie) of Petersburg, Va., Sylvia Wilson and Shelby Reeder (Albert) of Greensboro, N.C., and Andrew Jackson (Dorothy) of LaGrange, N.C.

She has 10 grandchildren, Dexter Bowden (LaDondra), Lt. Col. Alicia Jackson, James "King" Bowden, Jennifer Faison (Damien), Jawnshel "Teri" Minus (Harold), Wende' Patterson, Kristoffer Jones, Danyielle Jackson, Andrew "Drew" Jackson and T'mysia Wilson.

Mrs. Jackson also has 19 great-grandchildren, Elvira's, (Anastasia, Alexis, Jasmynn and Jayme), Marshall's, (Dexter, Jaret and Jordon), Sylvia's, (J'niyah), Shelby's, (Patrick, Albanie, Lauren, Justin, Kennedy and Brianna) and Andrew's, (Caleb, Kristoffer, Kameron, Mia and Andrew).

In addition, Mrs. Jackson leaves to mourn their loss a brother, Fred Braswell of Kennesaw, Ga.; three sisters, Johnnie Lewis and Hilda Rouse of Goldsboro, N.C., and Mary Alice Coley of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Verleaner Jackson of Goldsboro, N.C., plus a host of cousins, former students, neighbors, nieces and nephews.

Hamilton Funeral Chapel is handling the services.
