DORIS N. SMITH

LAGRANGE -- Doris Newsome Smith was born July 21, 1928, in Wayne County, one of seven children born to the late Giles Clayton Newsome and Julia Garris Newsome.

She was the wife of the late William Preston Smith, to whom she was married for 64 years.

A graduate of New Hope High School, she attended East Carolina Teachers College, and graduated from Atlantic Christian College. Doris taught second grade in the Wayne County Public Schools.

Doris is survived by her two children, Phyllis Smith and husband, Darius, and Gary Smith and wife, Connie, of LaGrange; four grandchildren, Leslie S. Hunter and husband, Paul, Will Smith, Sam Smith and Ben Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Kate Hunter and Davis Hunter.

Mrs. Smith is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Daphene and Albert Radford; brother and sister-in-law, Ras and Mary Newsome; special nieces, Lisa Ritko and Judy Ginn; special nephews, Steve and Jeff Radford; along with a number of other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was also preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret N. Gray and Irene N. Thorne, and two brothers, David P. Newsome and Paul G. Newsome.

A longtime member of Beston United Methodist Church, she was active in the church as long as her health permitted.

Doris loved to travel and play bridge, and enjoyed needlework and crafts.

For many years, she was a member of New Hope Extension Homemakers Club.

She enjoyed genealogy, and was a member of Old Dobbs County Genealogical Society and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

The family would like to thank the staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Dr. Robert S. Meyer and staff and caregivers, Benita Henderson, Dorothy Bridgers and Shammai Henderson.

A service of remembrance will be held Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sherman Guthrie officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends during the hour before the service.
