WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Mercedes Avatna Artis, 65, formerly of Fremont, N.C., died Friday, Aug. 9, at Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
She was the daughter of Mary Verneace Fuller Becton and the late Sylvester Artis.
She was preceded in death by her sister, LaVonchia Artis; her father, Sylvester Artis; and her grandparents, Absolum and Laurena Artis and Leslie and Classie Pate Fuller.
Ms. Artis graduated from Norwayne High School in 1966.
Mercedes was employed by Howard University Hospital.
She is survived by her son, Anil K. Artis of Durham, N.C.; three granddaughters, Jaylin, La'Crystal and La'Nia Artis; her mother, Mary Verneace Fuller Becton of Bowie, Md.; two brothers, Dwight Artis of Lanham, Md., and Michael Artis of Landover, Md.; a sister, Minnie Becton of Bowie, Md.; and a great-aunt, Cora Barnes Rowe of Fredericksburg, Va.
Viewing will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at 10 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, 9171 Central Ave., Capitol Heights, Md., 20743. Interment will be at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
