LAGRANGE -- Alvin "Bummy" Turnage, 92, passed away Tuesday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Alvin was born in Greene County, N.C., May 17, 1921, to the late William M. Turnage and Rebecca Smith Turnage. He was married to the late Mary Eleanor Hill Turnage.

Alvin was a member of Hood Swamp Friends Meeting.

He was a lifetime farmer in the Eastern Wayne community, and was an avid fox hunter.

Alvin served his country in World War II, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.

A service to celebrate his life will be Thursday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Lee and McGee Smith officiating. Interment will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with military honors.

Alvin is survived by his daughter, Cathy Dale Turnage and friend, John Best, of LaGrange; his son, Elton Turnage and wife, Brinda, of LaGrange; his grandchildren, Dean Turnage and wife, Angie, of Snow Hill and Phillip Turnage and friend, Ashley Campbell, of LaGrange; and three great-granddaughters, Dena Turnage, Kasey Turnage and Ally Turnage.

He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Trisch of Snow Hill, and his sister-in-law, Edna Sauls of Goldsboro.

In addition to his wife and parents, Alvin was preceded in death by a son, Philip Alvin Turnage, and a brother, Virgil Turnage.

The family will greet friends following the service Thursday at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
