Bernice "Bernie" Francis Chavis, 60, went to sleep peacefully surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday at 7 p.m. from the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro. Pastor Kelvin Gurley will officiate.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Chavis; his daughter, April Eubanks and "son"-in-law, Jerry; his son, Bryan Thomas Chavis and fiancée, Deborah Brown; a sister, Shelle Pope; six grandchildren, Allen, Matthew, Kevin, Justin, Daniel and Emmalee; and a great-grandchild, Brayden.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Southeastern Medical Oncology, Cures for the Colors, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
