VELMA G. BLAND JONES

MOUNT OLIVE -- Velma Gray Bland Jones, 79, passed away early Saturday, April 6, 2013, after a brief stay at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Velma was born on Feb. 22, 1934. She was a member of Mount Olive Free Will Baptist Church and attended for as long as her health allowed.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Jane Hare Bland; father, Luther W. Bland; stepmother, Harldor Bland; and brothers, George H. Bland and Robert W. Bland.

Velma leaves behind her children, Jo Ann Purvis and husband, Gary of Florida, Peggy Lee of Mount Olive, Alice Lassiter and husband, David, of Princeton, Kenneth Ray McCullen of Charlotte and James E. "Jimmy" Wilson Jr. of Goldsboro; her grandchildren, Alex Brogden, Marissa Lassiter, Keith Purvis, Tanya Purvis, Joey Lee, Amber Lee, Lauren McCullen and Katie McCullen; and several great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is a sister, Esther Reid and husband, Ben of Lancaster, Calif.; a brother, Bennie B. Bland and wife, Dianne of Goldsboro; two stepsisters, Kay Millard of Dudley and Faye Anderson Strickland and husband, Bobby of Mount Olive; and nephews and nieces, including Mike Bland, Steven Bland and Barbara.

Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Monday, April 8, at Tyndall Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Tony Ward. Visitation will follow. Committal and burial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Faison Cemetery in Faison.

Family and friends are also welcome to call at Mrs. Jones' residence at Mount Olive Village Apartments, Davis Street, Mount Olive.
