MOUNT OLIVE -- William Sherwood Jernigan, 74, of the Rones Chapel community, passed away early Friday morning, Oct. 5, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Funeral services will be held today, Oct. 7, at 5 p.m. at the chapel at Tyndall Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Paul Rose and the Rev. Mike Whatley, and followed by visitation. An entombment service will be held on Monday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery.

Mr. Jernigan will be remembered as being an "icon" at John Patterson Furniture Company, having been associated with the firm since its beginning 56 years ago. In 1978, he and his wife became owners and operators of the business, which continues to be operated by the Jernigan family.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Goodman Jernigan; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon J. and Sam Flowers of Rocky Mount; two sons, Glenn Jernigan of Goldsboro, and Larry Jernigan of Mount Olive; a sister, Delores J. Lee of Kinston; four brothers, Don Jernigan of Kinston, Rex Jernigan of Nahunta, Ray Jernigan and Doug Jernigan, both of LaGrange; his grandchildren, Ashley Flowers Coulson and husband, Stephen Coulson, Sarah Kathryn Flowers, Holly Michelle Jernigan, Jonathan Glenn Jernigan, William Gabriel "Gabe" Jernigan, Lauren Denise Jernigan, and Amber Shea Jernigan; a great-grandson, Wesley Coulson; and a lifelong friend since the age of nine, Bobby Hall of Mount Olive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jennings and Effie Jackson Jernigan; his stepmother, Brownie Hargrove Jernigan; two brothers, Robert Eugene Jernigan and Edward Earl "Bud" Jernigan, and his former "boss" and mentor, "Mr. John" Patterson and wife, "Miss Sara," both of whom he was very fond.

The family welcomes floral tributes, as well as memorial gifts to Rones Chapel Church, 138 Garner Chapel Road, Mount Olive, NC 28365 or Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.

A Tyndall service.
