William Paul Pitt, 79, 1107 S. Andrews Ave., died Monday.

There will be two viewings Friday, Oct. 5, from noon to 3 p.m. at J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home, 1701 Wayne Memorial Drive, and from 4 to 7 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church, 2114 N. Berkeley Blvd.

The family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at First African Baptist Church, with the Rev. Antonia Lawrence officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Born March 5, 1933, he was the son of Mildred Pitt and Alphonso Pat Artis.

He departed this life Oct. 1, 2012.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his wife, Mavis "Jan" Pitt; and a daughter, Mildred Patricia Riche.

William Paul Pitt, affectionately known to many as "Pitt," was reared in Goldsboro, and graduated from Dillard High School in 1950.

Upon graduating, he entered Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1951, and shortly after was drafted into the United States Army. He served in the Korean War before being honorably discharged and returning to college in 1954.

He graduated from Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1958.

His teaching career began in Hendersonville in 1958, and continued for more than 30 years. He held various teaching positions at Carver, Dillard, Norwayne and Central High Schools and, finally, Goldsboro High School, where he retired as dean of students/assistant principal in 1989.

Pitt was a member of the Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni and Friends, Gold-Wayne Chapter of Fayetteville State University, Theta Omicron Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Faith Presbyterian Church.

Precious memories will remain with many, including a sister, Ann Parks of Goldsboro; children, Darryl (Mary) Pitt of Goldsboro and Avis (Brian) Canty of Charlotte; grandsons, Darryl Pitt Jr. of Goldsboro, Bryson Canty and Justin Canty of Charlotte; and many special family members, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
