Doris Anne Dickens Shaw, 79, Goldsboro, formerly of Mount Olive, died Aug. 14, 2012, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Born Feb. 1, 1933, in Roanoke Rapids, Doris was the daughter of the late Cleveland Shepard Dickens Sr. and Virginia Catherine Blythe Dickens, and the widow of the late Willis Breedlove Shaw Sr.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Fredrick Wayne Dickens and Cleveland Shepard Dickens Jr., and a sister, Frances Dickens Hursey.
Doris is survived by her four children, daughters, Nancy Catherine Shaw Ybarra and husband, Gary, of Efland, Grace Meade Shaw Horne and husband, Phillip, of Greenville and Anne Caroline Shaw of Jacksonville; a son, Willis Breedlove Shaw Jr. of Goldsboro; two grandsons, Alexander Breedlove Horne and Phillip Harrison Horne both of Greenville; a brother, James Russell Dickens and wife, Alice, of Rocky Mount; nieces, Carol Dickens Barker of Rocky Mount and Missy Dickens Pair of Raleigh; a nephew, Rusty Dickens of Rocky Mount; and a great-niece, Anna Catherine Dickens of Raleigh.
Dee Dee, as she was lovingly known to her family and friends, shared her time and talents in many ways. In addition to her accomplishments as a wife, mother and homemaker, Dee Dee was a devoted volunteer with the American Red Cross. She was a lifetime donor and served as community coordinator for blood drives in Mount Olive.
A member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, she served her parish as a Sunday school teacher, altar guild member and soup kitchen volunteer.
She was also a member of the Twentieth Century Club, and for 12 years worked alongside her husband as a pharmacy technician at Medical Park Pharmacy.
Upon her husband's death in 1989, she assumed his partnership in Glenn and Martin Drug Co., which operated in Mount Olive from 1932 until 2009.
Doris was a writer at heart, and friends old and new were inspired and enriched by her notes. Her creativity and generosity extended to her kitchen; Doris was an excellent cook and treated countless individuals to her signature banana nut bread, zucchini bread and blueberry-banana pie.
The family will receive visitors at Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro Friday, Aug. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m.
A funeral service and interment will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Goldsboro Saturday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m., with a reception at the church immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church or the American Red Cross.
