CASSANDRA WHITTEMORE SETZER

May 17, 1928-Jan. 24, 2012

KINSTON -- Mrs. Cassandra Whittemore Setzer, Kinston, died Jan. 24 following a courageous battle with declining health.

She was preceded in death by nine days by her husband of 57 years Evan S. Setzer Jr. They relocated to Kinston from Greensboro to receive attention from their daughters for their health care.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, March 21 at 2 p.m. will be held at Historic Providence Christian Church in Graham. A private family graveside service in Linwood Cemetery will follow. The Rev. Darryl Peebles will officiate.

Mrs. Setzer was born May 17, 1928, in Alamance County, the daughter of the late Mr. Clyde Atwood Whittemore and Mrs. Madeline Ray Whittemore.

She always considered Graham to be her heart's home.

She was educated in the Alamance County school system and Flora MacDonald College.

She is survived by daughter, Suzanne Setzer Bizzell and husband, Rob, of Kinston; daughter, Mary Setzer Maness of Goldsboro; son Evan S. Setzer III and wife, Julie, of High Point; grandchildren, Elizabeth Bizzell Saylors and husband, Kyle, of Goldsboro, Margaret Reams Bizzell of Raleigh and Riley Cathleen Maness and Jonathan Robbins Maness both of Goldsboro; great-grandchildren, Caroline Davis Saylors, 3, and Eleanor Elizabeth Saylors, 3 months, of Goldsboro; eight nieces; six nephews; nine great-nieces; 11 great-nephews; six great-great-nieces; and 12 great-great-nephews.

She was one of 11 children, six girls and five boys.

Those surviving are Charles Ervin Whittemore of Graham, Jacqueline Whittemore Kendall of Charlotte and Betsy Whittemore White of Graham.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Miss Elizabeth Ray Whittemore, Mrs. Geneva Whittemore Fitch, Miss Thester Marie Whittemore, Mr. George Settle Whittemore II, Mr. Clyde Atwood Whittemore Jr., Mr. James William Whittemore and Mr. David Long Whittemore, along with an infant daughter and a son-in-law, Dr. Rubin Franklin Maness of Goldsboro.

Mrs. Setzer was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

She was an inspiration to many. She strove to make her interest in politics, education and women's cardiac care make the world a better place. We will miss her smile, her quick wit and unique perspective on life.

The family wishes to convey sincere appreciation to the medical staff in Kinston and Greenville and Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Hers was a life well lived, and she will be truly missed.
