MOORESVILLE -- Ferrell Gamble Dabbs, formerly of Goldsboro, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, following an extended illness.

Ferrell was born Jan. 16, 1923, to James Gartrell Gamble and Mary Lela Watson Gamble in Glenn, Ga. She was married to James Howard Dabbs in February 1951 in Charleston, S.C.

After college, she resided in Charleston, S.C., until 1963, and Goldsboro from 1963 until 1991. She then moved to Charlotte to be near her children and grandchildren.

Ferrell worked as a substitute teacher for many years in Goldsboro, followed by years working in the retail fashion industry.

In her younger years, she was an award-winning dancer, and enjoyed playing basketball. She was a wonderful seamstress, and loved making pretty clothes for her daughters.

After retiring, she spent her time enjoying her grandsons, caring for her beloved cats and dogs and shopping for pretty clothes.

She was a member at Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston, S.C., First Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro and Albemarle Road Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.

Ferrell is survived by a daughter, Betsy Dabbs Johnson of Cornelius and her husband, John Johnson; and a daughter, Connie Dabbs Allred of Simpsonville, S.C., and her husband, David Allred, and their sons. Eric Allred and Scott Allred.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Howard Dabbs of Goldsboro, her parents, and eight brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, with the Rev. Drew Clark officiating.
