HEZZIE 'DEACON' LEE MITCHELL

Deacon Hezzie Lee Mitchell, 96, lovingly known by his family, church members and friends as "Deacon," 606 Wilmington Ave., Goldsboro, departed his earthly life peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

"Deacon" was born in Wayne County Aug. 9, 1915, to the late Nellie Bryant Mitchell and Jesse Mitchell.

Deacon Hezzie was a member of Saint Delight United Holy Church in the Parkstown community.

Funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Branch Memorial Tabernacle, 500 Gulley St., Goldsboro, with pastor Devin C. Pickett officiating. Interment will follow in Old Mill Cemetery, 2852 Central Heights Road, Goldsboro.

A public viewing will be held Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at McIntyre Funeral Home and Florist, 900 S. George St., Goldsboro, from 2 to 7 p.m., with the family present to receive friends and other family members from 6 to 7 p.m.

"Deacon" leaves to cherish his loving and precious memories his children, Gloria Davis Stewart of Dudley, Adrain Rhodes and wife, Edna, of Gloucester, Va., Clara Forte, Adene McIntyre and husband, Kenneth, of Goldsboro, Angeline Griffin of Greenville, Benjamin Griffin and wife, Sarah, of Goldsboro, James Griffin of Washington, D.C., Thomas H. Griffin of Elizabethtown and Jimmy Bunn; three sisters, Mary Lena Froskey and Ada Best both of Goldsboro and Nellie Thompson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four brothers, Leander Mitchell and wife, Sarah, of Goldsboro, Nathaniel Mitchell of Dudley, John Mitchell of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Bobby Mitchell of Maryland; 41 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at 606 Wilmington Ave., Goldsboro, where family and friends will assemble one hour prior at 9:45 a.m. to the funeral in preparation for the funeral procession.
