EVELYN G. DAVIS

EVELYN G. DAVIS

Jan. 25, 1915-Dec. 22, 2011

Evelyn G. Davis, a lifelong resident of Wayne County, passed into the loving arms of her Savior on Dec. 22, 2011.

Born Jan. 25, 1915 to Allen B. and Mollie Sasser Grady, she is survived by her devoted daughter, Vivian LaNelle Davis, and son-in-law, Robert Henderson.

She graduated from Seven Springs High School in 1934 as salutatorian of her class and attended National Business Training School in Charlotte, N.C.

After having worked many years as secretary for Mr. L.E. Pearson (Insurance Co.), she inherited half the business upon his death in the mid-1960s. She later became the owner and, as such, was a friend to many farmers in the county, writing crop, tobacco barn and vehicle insurance, oftentimes extending credit to her customers until fall harvest time. She loved her work and "visiting" with all her customers as they came into the office. In 1989, she sold the business to Frederick Insurance Company and continued to work there until her retirement in 1991.

She attended First Baptist Church and was secretary/treasurer of the Dorcas Sunday School class for more than 40 years.

Always jolly and ready with a smile, she loved Christmas, dogs, flower arranging and gardening, sitting on the porch, hush puppies and country music. In recent years, she spent many happy hours with her daughter in Pittsboro, N.C., where she made numerous friends listening to bluegrass and country music at Charlie's Barn in Pittsboro, N.C., and at Thurlow Lake in Vass, N.C.

She was an astute business woman, determined, strong of faith and constitution and believed in never giving up. She was a champion of fairness, believed in the dignity of all work and in the worth of all people. These things she passed to her daughter by example over the course of a lifetime.

Her daughter and son-in-law wish to express their deepest appreciation to Ms. Marlene Short and Ms. Maxine Martin for providing loving and dedicated care over the last several years, Dr. Charles Wehbie, Boylan Medical Center, Raleigh, N.C., who carefully and diligently managed her healthcare needs, Pharmacist John Williamson, whose compassion, dedication and sense of humor are unmatched, and to Stephanie West, Wells Fargo, for her kindness and direction over the years. The efforts and attention of each of these people allowed her to live her life just as she wanted to the very end: at home with dignity and grace.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband of 43 years, George Becton (Beck) Davis, and sisters, Vivian Grady and Mabel Grady Yocham.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at the Sasser Family cemetery on Hwy. 111 S. following a visitation from 9 to 10 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seymourfuneralhome.com.
