Died Sept. 1, 2011

OAK HILL, Va. -- Janice Rose Whitfield Haney, 58, of Oak Hill left the loving embrace of her family to be received in the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on Thursday evening, Sept. 1, at Reston Hospital in Reston, Va.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m., at Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church in Mount Olive, the church of her childhood and also the ancestral church home of the Whitfield family. Bishop Jimmy Whitfield and the Rev. Vance Harrell will be officiating. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.

Janice was raised in the Thunder Swamp community near Mount Olive, and graduated from Southern Wayne High School. She received a bachelor's degree in music education from East Carolina University and a master's degree in music education from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. She taught school in Illinois and California.

Janice is survived by her husband, Michael "Mike" Haney; a daughter, Jessica Rose Haney; a son, Michael Scott Haney; and a sister, Jane W. Warren and husband, the Rev. Marty Warren of Falcon. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Sallie J. Whitfield of Mount Olive; a nephew, David Alexander "Alex" Whitfield of Mount Olive; a niece, Olivia Jane Warren of Falcon; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; Ralph Alexander and Lois Jones Whitfield, and a brother Ralph Douglas "Doug" Whitfield.

Visitation will be today, Sept. 4, from 6 until 8 p.m., at Tyndall Funeral Home.

A memorial celebration service will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Va.

Janice was an inspiration to many people. Her zest for life, unshakable spirit, and strong determination will always remain with those who knew and loved her. She fought a good fight and kept the faith...now, she is at rest.
