CLAIRE L. STARLING

March 31, 1927-June 28, 2011

Claire Long Starling, 84, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Kitty Askins.

Claire was born in Bolton County March 31, 1927, to the late George Milton Long and LouElla Hazlett Long.

She was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was a devoted volunteer for many years and an active attendant.

Claire loved playing duplicate bridge, was a Life Master, and directed the Goldsboro Bridge Club for many years.

She was a lifelong devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Services will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church Thursday, June 30, 2011, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jim Harry officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service. A private graveside service will be held at Wayne Memorial Park.

Claire is survived by her son, Samuel W. "Sandy" Starling II and wife, Lynn, of Morehead City; her daughter, Margaret Starling Hickey and husband, Tom, of Memphis, Tenn.; her grandchildren, Tripp Starling and John Starling of Beaufort, N.C., Lea Bowyer of High Point, N.C., Thomas D. Hickey of Alexandria, Va., and Timothy S. Hickey of Nashville, Tenn.; her nine great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Jean Long Smith of Alameda, Calif., and Margaret Long Lewis of Staunton, Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Samuel W. Starling, and her brothers, Harry M. Long and G. Hazlett Long.
