While surrounded by family, Samuel McKinley Jackson, 85, went to sleep in Jesus at Kitty Atkins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Public viewing will be held Tuesday, June 14, 2011, from 3 to 5:15 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., Goldsboro, N.C.

A celebration of life and viewing will be at the Mount Zion Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1289 Parkstown Road, LaGrange, N.C., Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The final viewing will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2011, prior to the funeral services at Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1065 Tommy's Road, Goldsboro, N.C. Elder Vanard J. Mendinghall, president of the South Atlantic Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, will be officiating. Entombment will follow in Old Mill Cemetery.

Samuel Jackson, a retired general building contractor, was actively involved in the Parkstown community and Wayne County area.

He was chairperson of the Parkstown Christmas Parade and co-editor of the Parkstown Herald. He was president of Central High School Parent-Teacher Association for 12 years, and the founder and president of the North Carolina Youth Federation of Seventh-day Adventists.

Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife, Julia Braswell Jackson of the home; and his children, Joyce Bowden (James) of Raleigh, N.C., Marshall Jackson (Donna) of Garner, N.C., G. LaVern Jackson (Jesse) of Hopewell, Va., Sylvia Wilson of Greensboro, N.C., Shelby Reeder (Albert) of Greensboro, N.C., and Andrew Jackson (Dorothy) of Parkstown community.

He also leaves 10 grandchildren, Dexter Bowden of Louisville, Ky., Lt. Col. Alicia Jackson of Vilseck, Germany, James Bowden III of Huntersville, Jennifer Faison of Raleigh, Jawnshel Minus of Bowie, Md., Kristoffer Jones of Goldsboro, Wende Patterson, Danyielle Jackson and T'mysia Wilson of Greensboro and Yeoman Third Class Andrew Jackson of Great Lakes, Ill. His in-laws include Verleaner Jackson, Hilda Rouse, Johnnie Lewis, Jonah Best, Fred Braswell and Mary Braswell.

The family is receiving friends at the home in Parkstown, and condolences may be sent to 107 Rosa Lane, LaGrange, N.C. 28551.
