MILDRED EDWARDS CASEY
March 13, 1925-April 21, 2011
Mildred Davis Edwards Casey, 86, 130 Providence Church Road, and most recently a resident of the Sterling House, died April 21, 2011, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
A native of Providence United Methodist Church community, Mrs. Casey was born March 13, 1925, and lived in Wayne County all her life.
She was the daughter of the late Alvin Winford and Bessie Davis Edwards.
Mrs. Casey was married to the late Leslie Casey for 53 years. Leslie and Mildred owned Casey's Mill Inc. in Dudley, N.C., where she served as bookkeeper for many years. She was co-owner and president from 1976 to 1990.
She was recognized by Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association in the Who's Who in US Executives in 1990 upon her retirement.
Mrs. Casey is survived by a daughter, Linda Aycock of West End; a daughter, Lois Casey of Goldsboro; a son, Leslie W. Casey of Wrightsville Beach; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Gary Aycock and wife, Emily, and their children, Emma Grace and Aaron Douglas Aycock of Laurel Hill, and Randall Aycock and wife, Robin, of Hoover, Ala.; nieces, Bess Edwards-Sawyer and husband, Bill, of Goldsboro and Sandra Gellar and husband, Richard, of Charlotte; and a nephew, Allen Edwards and wife, Brenda, of Mt. Airy.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Carl S. Edwards, and wife, Catheran P. Edwards.
Mrs. Casey was born and raised next to Providence Church.
She attended Louisburg College, and continued to keep in contact with college friends.
When she married, she moved to Emmaus Church community, where she was active in Home Demonstration Club and other community activities.
Her church work at Emmaus Baptist Church included teaching the young adult Sunday school class, WMU and Sunday school superintendent.
In 1959, she returned to Providence Church community, where she continued her involvement in church activities, teaching Sunday school classes and serving on the worship committee and the pastor parish committee. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church, and attended the Wesley Sunday school class and Providence Friends United.
Mrs. Casey enjoyed cooking and entertaining, and she was well known for her cake baking skills.
She enjoyed traveling with friends after she and Leslie retired.
She was an avid ACC basketball fan for many years and enjoyed every game. Time spent with her grandsons and great grandchildren was special to her, and they held a special place in her heart.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 24, 2011, at 4 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church, with pastor Terry Hobbs and the Rev. Graham Royall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will greet friends Saturday, April 23, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and at other times at the home.
