JULIAN W. "JAY" SMITH
Died Feb. 25, 2011
Julian W. "Jay" Smith, 66, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, after a hard battle with heart problems.
A celebration of his life and his homecoming will be at New Hope Friends Meeting, 4451 Hwy. 70 East, this evening, Feb. 27, 2011, at 4 p.m. with Pastor Bill Garner officiating.
Jay was the son of the late Corinne Baum Smith Rowe and Julian W. Smith Sr., both deceased, of Elizabeth City. He also grew up with his much-loved grandparents, A.D. and Annie Baum, also of Elizabeth City.
Jay is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Ava "Candy" Owens Smith of the home, a daughter, Michelle Smith Kornegay and son-in-law, Linwood; a son, Jason Michael Smith and daughter-in-law, Selena, all of Goldsboro. He leaves behind four much-loved grandchildren, Kelsey and Cameron Kornegay, Taylor and Jayda Smith. He also leaves behind a brother, Douglas Wayne Smith and wife, Sandra, of Elizabeth City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carolyn Bradshaw Owens, Jim and Joyce Tompkins of Goldsboro; Donald Doris Owens Huffman of Durham, and Peggy F. Owens of Wilmington. Also are 16 nieces and nephews to remember him.
Jay graduated from Elizabeth City High School and served four years with the United States Air Force including one tour of duty in Vietnam. He was a marketing representative for the automotive parts distribution industry. He retired in January 2009. He was an avid golfer and a sports enthusiast and much enjoyed his grandchildren and their involvement in sports.
He along with his wife was a member of New Hope Friends Meeting, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Quaker Men for many years.
Visitation with the family will be after the service in the Family Life Center of the church, and at other times at the home of Jim and Joyce Tompkins at 4854 Hwy. 70 East. Jay's ashes will be buried later privately in New Hope Friends Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Building Fund of New Hope Friends Church.
