SNOW HILL -- Willie V. "Peanut" Sowers, 85, passed away Wednesday morning, Jan. 12, 2011.

A native of Greene County, Mr. Sowers was born Nov. 4, 1925, the son of Harry and Dora Dail Sowers.

He was a graduate of the Snow Hill High School, and a veteran, having served in the United States Navy during World War II.

A warehouseman and tobacconist, Mr. Sowers was a staple in the eastern North Carolina tobacco belt, having managed multiple warehouses, and worked as a buyer in more recent years.

Mr. Sowers was a member of Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church.

Funeral services celebrating his life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leon Grubbs officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Snow Hill Cemetery.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sowers was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine S. Sowers in 2003.

His surviving family includes his children, Lewis Sowers of Snow Hill and his special friend, Annette Chauncey, Wilbur Perry and wife, Brenda, of LaGrange, Scott Sowers and wife, Marilyn, of Abilene, Texas, Mike Perry and wife, Karen, of Snow Hill, Stan Sowers of Wilmington and Lisa Sowers Maze and husband, Tom, of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Vernon Sowers of Greenville, Micki Tingen of Snow Hill, David Sowers of Washington and Joshua Maze of Rocky Mount; and great-grandchildren, Madison Tingen, Perry Tingen and Skylar Sowers.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service, and other times at the residence, 1900 Joshua Mewborn Road, Snow Hill.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church, 3984 Hull Road, Snow Hill, N.C., 28580.
