Herbert Gilmore Hartley, 82, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at the Brian Center surrounded by his family.

Gilmore was born in Wayne County Sept. 24, 1928, to the late Herbert Hartley and Lula Williford Hartley.

Gilmore was a member of Black Jack Grove Free Will Baptist Church.

He was also a member of the Retired State Employee's Association.

Gilmore served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at 10 a.m., in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Rose and the Rev. Patrick Muston officiating. Interment will follow at Selah Christian Church Cemetery.

Gilmore is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie Stafford Hartley; his daughter, Cathy Best and husband, Kirby, of Grantham; his son, Gary Hartley and wife, Jill, of Trinity; his grandchildren, Hailey Hartley, Kelby Best and Kelly Best; his brother, George "Bill" Hartley of Princeton; his sisters, Christie Talton of Princeton and Mildred Barstow of Palatka, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Vickie Kay Hartley; his brothers, David Hartley, Woodrow Hartley and Raymond Hartley; and his sisters, Christie Jackson, Luria Worley and Susie Cotton.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at 958 Selah Church Road in Goldsboro.

The family would like to express its appreciation to the staff of the Brian Center for the professionalism, kindness and love shown to Mr. Hartley.
