Jerry Leland West, 63, a longtime farmer in the northern Wayne area of Wayne County, died suddenly Thursday.

A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Waitus and Nancy Yelverton West.

Jerry was a partner in West Family Farms.

He was a past president of the North Carolina Tobacco Growers Association, a past member of the North Carolina State FSA committee and a member of the Wayne County Agriculture Hall of Fame.

Jerry was a member of Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, and was a member and past master of Masonic Home Lodge # 613 AF & AM.

Jerry's love was his family, especially his grandchildren, the land from which he made his living and helping people.

A service to celebrate the life of Jerry will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Barry Stallings and Dr. Don Sauls officiating. At Jerry's request, burial with Masonic Rites will be on the family farm that he loved to plant and see the crops grow.

Surviving are his wife, Audrey Howell West; sons, Brad West and wife, Lynn, and Craig West and wife, Nell, of Fremont; his grandchildren, Ayden, Addison, Lee and Luke West; a brother, Tom West of Goldsboro; a special employee, Juan Martinez; and many special friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday at Seymour Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m.
