WILLIAM B. BOWDEN

PIKEVILLE -- William B. Bowden, 171 Booker St., Pikeville, was born June 4, 1939, to the late Maggie Lewis Bowden and the late Horace Bowden Sr.

He departed this life Oct. 1, 2010, at the Veterans Hospital in Durham.

He attended Wayne County Public Schools.

After graduating he enlisted in the Armed Forces, where he served his country with great pride and dedication.

He was a member of St. Luke Church of Christ, Goldsboro, N.C. Later in life he accepted Christ as Lord of his life.

He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Yvonne D. Bowden of the home; a brother, minister Horace Bowden Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Bessie L. Mack of Baltimore, Md..; four daughters, Bessie (Sherman) Reid of Clayton, N.C., Eleanor Tart and Felicia (Kendrick) Ward both of Dudley, N.C., and Kim Bowden of Fredericksburg, Va..; a son, William Bowden Jr. of Murray, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three special cousins, Darlena Newson, Dorothy Lewis and Mozelle Shine; three sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, others relatives and friends.

A time to visit with Mr. Bowden and his family will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Luke Church of Christ. His family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Services to celebrate the life and legacy of this great man will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Luke Church. Following the services in the sanctuary, Mr. Bowden, along with his adored family, will be escorted to Old Mill cemetery for interment rites with military honors. It is in this earthly consign that Mr. Bowden shall remain until that glorious day when Gabriel will blow his heavenly trumpet and those that are asleep in Christ shall be caught up to meet the master in the air.

The Bowden family is receiving services of compassion and class from E.M. Matthews Funeral Home and Cremations Inc.
