JOHN EDWIN YELVERTON

STANTONSBURG -- John Edwin Yelverton, 81, of St. James Church Road, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at home.

Mr. Yelverton was born March 31, 1929, to the late Samuel and Margaret Cox Yelverton. He was retired from the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII, the Vietnam War and the Korean conflict. Mr. Yelverton was a member of Watery Branch Church in Stantonsburg.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Yelverton; three daughters, Pamela Lynn Bussert of South Carolina, Paula Edwina Layton of Georgia, and Carla Marguerite Murray of Wilson; one stepdaughter, GiGi Belew of Arkansas; brothers, Richard Yelverton and wife, Bobbie, of Patetown and George Yelverton and wife, Kay, of Fremont; sister, Margaret Siegel of Goldsboro; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth Yelverton, Mary Taylor and Indiana Barefoot; and a brother, Samuel R. Yelverton Jr.

Arrangements were made by Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Watery Branch Church, Stantonsburg.
