RALPH A. GURLEY

Ralph Aaron Gurley, 81, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday afternoon surrounded by his family.

Ralph was born in Johnston County to the late Wiley Herman Gurley and Flossie Daughtry Gurley.

For many years, Ralph owned and operated Gurley's Exxon and Ice Co. in Goldsboro.

Ralph was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

He had also served his country in the Merchant Marines.

Ralph will be remembered for his hard work and how he instilled that work ethic in those that surrounded him.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne White and the Rev. Seonz Joshua Eom officiating. Burial will follow in Hephzibah Cemetery.

Ralph was a devoted husband to Janice Pittman Gurley for more than 59 years.

He was a loving father to his daughter, Olivia Gurley Best, and her husband, Richard Dale Best, of Newport and his son, Doug Gurley of Goldsboro.

He loved spending time with six grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sisters, Linda G. King of Princeton and Ruth G. Matthews of Smithfield, and his brother, Alton Gurley of Princeton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Grace Gurley Williford of Goldsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 2706 Salem Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at his home, 160 Salem Country Lane in Goldsboro.
