ELVIN WRIGHT GRANT

Elvin Wright Grant, 79, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family.
A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Edgar Franklin and Maggie Best Grant.
Raised on the farm, Mr. Grant developed a strong work ethic.
He attended New Hope School, graduating as valedictorian of his class. He went on to attend North Carolina State University, graduating with a degree in agriculture.
Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army, and proudly served his country for more than 20 years.
After retiring from active duty, he worked for the United States Coast Guard as a civil servant for an additional 20 years.
Mr. Grant was always active in his church as a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Elizabeth City for 30 years, and most recently at First Baptist Church of Goldsboro.
Mr. Grant was blessed by God to receive the miracle of two heart transplants during his lifetime, allowing him to enjoy an additional 22 years.
During this special time, his family has laughed and cried, while sharing wonderful stories and memories. Some words used to best describe Papa Elvin include: honorable, strong, dignified, proud, respectful, provider, punctual, stubborn and witty. His family prays that they will always honor his memory.
Elvin Grant is survived by his most precious wife of 57 years, Eleanor Hare Grant. He is also survived by his daughter, Angela Neal and husband, Steve, of Gastonia, N.C.; daughter, Donna Grant of Raleigh, N.C.; son Terry A. Grant and Marilue Cook of Goldsboro, N.C.; and daughter, Linda Larimore and husband, Greg, of Goldsboro, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Kristin Neal, Kimberly Neal, Daniel Larimore and Ashley Larimore.
Mr. Grant was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Elliot and Mary Holland, and a grandson, Matthew Larimore.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with Dr. Glenn Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Pikeville Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
