BERTHA C. WOODARD

June 30, 1926–July 4, 2010

GOLDSBORO — Bertha Capps Woodard, 84, widow of Dalmer Vernon “Woody” Woodard, and the daughter of the late Haywood and Fannie Capps, died Sunday at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Woodard was reared in Johnston County and graduated from Princeton High School, where she was one of the first female bus drivers and where she served as captain her junior and senior years of the girls softball team.

After moving to Goldsboro and marrying, Mrs. Woodard became a faithful member and trustee of Rosewood Worship Center, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the women’s auxiliary.

She was a charter member of the Home Demonstration Club of Wayne County and a member of the Ladies Democrat Party and had served as chairman of United Church Ministries.

Mrs. Woodard was the co-founder of Woodard Care Inc., where she served as the administrator until her retirement in 1992.

A service to celebrate Bertha’s life will be held Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Rosewood Worship Center, with the Rev. Lynn Epps and the Rev. Charles Heath officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

She is survived by her children and spouses, Charles Dalmer Woodard and wife, Phyllis Woodard, of Goldsboro and Jean Woodard Jones and husband, Michael Corbin Jones, of Rosewood. She is survived by her sisters, Betty Hester of Princeton and Peggy Bryant of Selma; her brothers, Roy Capps of Grifton and Carl Capps; sister-in-law, Angie Capps of Selma; three sisters-in-law, Katie Capps Mitchell of Goldsboro, Mavis “Trudy” Capps of Goldsboro and Mrs. Shelby Clapp of Durham. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michael Scott Jones and wife, Cammi, Charles Brian Woodard, Lezley Jones Maldonado and husband, Eddie, and Charles Kevin Woodard and wife, Elizabeth; and her great-grandchildren, Kimberlin Michael Jones, Hayden Michael Maldonado, Riley Marissa Maldonado, Charles Berkley Woodard and William Kemp Woodard.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sister, William “Bobby” Capps, Lonnie “Skip” Capps, James Capps, Pearline Capps Sauls, Earl Capps and Leslie Ray Capps.

Pallbearers serving will be Terry Capps, Donnie Capps, Brian Woodard, Kevin Woodard, Scott Jones, Gerald Hester, Robin Capps and Greg Newcomb.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the United Church Ministries, 119 W. Walnut St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534, or Rosewood Worship Center, 2103 O’Berry Center Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.

The family will receive friends at Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro, N.C., Tuesday, July 6, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m.

At other times, the family will be at 121 Cashwell Drive, Goldsboro, N.C.
